When was the last time you offered kindness to the outside world? When was the last time you smiled at a stranger? The last time you offered your meal to a homeless person? The last time you simply listened to someone just so the person can share his/her story?
Kindness is the quality of doing something, without expecting anything in return.
To be gentle, compassionate and tolerant. Kindness means being friendly, polite and mindful of others.
While kindness sometimes is related to being naive or weak, this is certainly not the case. Above all, kind people are brave, authentic and have a strong character.
Being kind to others brings a sense of well-being, happiness and satisfaction with oneself.
A lot of people have this idea of improving themselves, because they want to make the world a better place. This is the ultimate goal.
A friend of mine, who happens to be a professor of psychology, says that this is why we exist. We exist to make the world a better place, to help others and to be better everyday.
Kindness is one of the most important values one should learn to cultivate. Embodying kindness brings life-improvement and significance. Certainly, taking care of others, being of help or just doing something for someone makes you feel better about yourself. Seems like this is what we want – to feel better and to make someone else feel better.
Well, being kind is one of the things that helps improve the quality of life and brings a sense of purpose.
The secret to happiness is in helping others.
There is a Chinese proverb that goes:
In Helping Others You Help Yourself
If you want happiness for a day – go fishing.
If you want happiness for a month – get married.
If you want happiness for a year – inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime – help someone else.
For centuries the greatest thinkers have dwellt on the meaning of life. Many of them have come to the conclusion that it is related to being of value to someone else.
The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. – Mahatma Gandhi
When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace. – Dalai Lama
The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
Give freely to the world these gifts of love and compassion. Do not concern yourself with how much you receive in return, just know in your heart it will be returned. – Steve Maraboli
Given these points, this is definitely not a new concept or some kind of an emerging trend. To be kind means to embody your true nature and to start living from the core.
It is better to give, than to receive, because the more we give, the more we get back. Give, and you shall receive. Helping others will help you live a more meaningful life.
How can we become more kind?
First of all start by being more kind to yourself. A person who loves and treats himself well, ultimately will do the same with other people. Also by understanding our own needs and nature, we understand the needs of others. Secondly, practice gratitude and mindfulness. These simple, but profound practices will bring you happiness and appreciation of what you have. And finally be careful what kind of food you eat and what kind of activities you do.
Give other people your most important asset – your time.
When engaged in a conversation with someone else, try to listen to that person, empty your mind. However, listen to understand, not to respond. Moreover, try not to judge or value the conversation, but try to be present and attentive.
Become more aware of your surroundings. In other words, dont get caught in your own mind.
Do you see a homeless person? Maybe you can share your food with him.; Maybe you see a lady struggling with heavy baggage? Help her.; Open the door for someone.;
A kind word can also be an act of kindness. As a result making a compliment to someone can lighten his/her day. Certainly, it will make the other person feel better about him/herself.
There are many ways and opportunities to be kind. However, you should find your own way, find what fits your lifestyle.
Kindness is a value that has helped me along my journey, above all it made me more happy and more fulfilled. Maybe it will help you too.
I hope this has inspired you to become more kind. Remember that what we do in our days is how we live our lives. Are we becoming better everyday or taking a step back?
