I love nature and nature loves me back, because I care about her. Do you care about the environment?
It is not something different that I do in a matter of some kind of unusual activity. Yes, there are people making movements to clean the city once a year, but although that helps it is only a temporary act of care. It matters to bring more attention to the topic. But what matters more is to change your mindset.
There are still people thinking that a single plastic bottle is not going to be so much and they just throw it away right then and there wherever they drink the last sip. And we all might have done that when we were young, but that was just an immature act. Responsibility to be a global citizen nowadays is something going beyond cleaning your only place and point others who didn’t. It is far more efficient if we tend to develop a culture towards a cleaner and pleasant environment.
It is funny that some people, even my brother, they are just relying on somebody else to go after them and clean.
Just the fact that you leave in the city does not mean that the local disposal firm is going to take care of it. And even if it does where is that trash all going? We all are separating metal cans from plastic bottles from paper, but really aren’t they going in the same place. I have a different perspective living in Eastern Europe, however staying in America for a year I don’t think there is much of a difference in that matter. Do you know how many plastic straws are restaurants and coffee shops using per day? This number is huge — 500 mil, and there are going in the ocean and here and there. Where nobody cares about a single piece, tomorrow that may be the food of a fish. It is a fact that the majority of them are disposed of in the ocean, somehow. You know what happens next…
As a reminder I am writing this post, not that is something special. And still, I am surprised how things so basic are still neglected. Nature is a closed system, that means if we want something from it, we need to give back. One way or another. Together we can make a difference in sustainable development.
Nowadays, more than ever, we have to take care of our environment
Humans have been exploiting the earth massively since the agricultural revolution that happened 10,000 BC years ago. Because of the need for new fields for food or building cities, our ancestors have cut ton’s of trees or even destroyed whole eco-systems for the sake of the human development. Furthermore, these actions can never be turned around. For example, if we cause the mammoths to extinct, how are we going to return them back?
We are still driving plants and animals to extinction. Yes, we have developed as species, very intelligent and complex, but the way we are living today in relation to nature is not better than the centuries that have passed. Same thing happening today. Big chunks of trees get cut down in order to exploit the wood or use the area to build something. This consumerism mentality is going to be the end of humanity.
The turning point
In order to improve our connection with the environment, we have to take responsibility for our actions. Above all, we have to become aware of the problems that we are facing. How do we do that? Firstly, I advice you to make your own research and see what is the reality right now? A good example would be websites like BBC.
Secondly, ask people around you what do they think? Are they aware of the issues we are currently facing? How are they dealing with that?
Thirdly, become part of something that is working towards saving our planet. A good example of such might be joining your university club or becoming a part of an NGO with such missions.
Things aren’t so bad after all
More and more people are learning how to live a zero-waste life, how to reduce their impact on the environment, how to participate in global projects for sustainability and so on. There are organizations working hard for the preservation of Earth. Furthermore, companies are implementing strategies for less impact and eco-efficiency. A good example.
Simple ways to help the environment
I will list a couple of ideas to help you impact the environment in a positive way.
- Adopt or experiment with a meat-free diet. For more on the topic I advice you to watch the documentary Cowspiracy.
- Bring your own bags with you. Don’t take the plastic bags from the store when you go shopping. They float in the ocean, disgusting.
- Buy urself a reusable water bottle.
- Only buy things when absolutely necessary
- Consume less, adopt a minimalistic lifestyle.
- Ditch junk food, here’s why.
