Flotation and sensory deprivation tanks

I’m often asked what is flotation and what is a sensory deprivation tank.
This is something I have experienced not too long ago on my semester abroad.
And I can tell you that it is one of the best things I have tried in my short existence.
This is an experience that expands your consciousness, turns you inside out and makes your ego shallow.

The sensory deprivation tank is basically a tool for evolving, developing your mind and becoming who you really are. By the latter I mean becoming the observer, the being that feels emotions, enjoys the sun, and is a part of nature.

The tank is filled with water, the water is heated to the same temperature of your  body, inside the water there are ~500kg of  magnesium sulfate (MgSo4) which makes your body float above, just like in Dead Sea. So basically, you are just laying inside, relaxing and because the water is heated as the same temperature as your body, after a while you stop feeling it and become senseless.

You enter this room, and inside there is a bath and the chamber. You get undressed, take a shower, put ear pods in your ears and step into it. Then by your decision you can float either with an open door, or a closed one.(not everyone can do it with a closed one, but this is when the magic unfolds).
Already inside, you are in this dark place, floating, not feeling anything, not hearing anything, and it’s just you and your mind. And this is the moment when you actually see what really is going on. You begin to listen. Your mind is running like a crazy monkey jumping from thoughts to thoughts without stopping. This is something that needs correction. We have to calm that little animal and put it into a cage. Because remember, you are not your mind.

After a while you begin to relax and get into a meditative state of mind. You start breathing deep, your body becomes more vibrant, you become more aware. The first twenty minutes or so, are a sort of a seminar of your life. It shows you all the different issues of it that you don’t like, things that are bothering you, things about your behavior, disappointments and so on. Things that had happened, why they happened this way and how you should have reacted or done differently.

Once you are done with this contemplation, and clear all that bullshit in your life, you start to think about the big picture. Your body completely settles into the experience and your mind slowly becomes more clear. I personally have thought about the universe, the human beings, each individual’s actions, having different experiences in each others lives and you just go deeper and deeper. All of this without the body in the way.

Imagine yourself like an onion. When you first start doing the isolation tank you peel only a couple of  layers. Couple of skins loose, you can’t really go to the core. It’s too hard to completely let go of who you are. But as you keep doing it and as you get more and more comfortable with the experience you really start letting go. You let go of things that have happened to you, either negative or positive, you let go of emotions, you let go of past relationships, you let go of letting go. And this is the point where you become gone. You disappear. What fades away is the ego, the shell that we have around ourselves. There is a point where you completely relax and feel how everything and everyone is connected.

This is an environment that doesn’t exist anywhere in the world, its free of distractions, that is what it makes it so special. It’s like you find yourself again in your mother’s womb. You get to your center of consciousness and its a hell of a ride.
Everybody should do the tank, you will learn more about yourself, develop your thinking and gain wonderful insights. It’s an amazing way to think.
It was built by the scientist John Lilly, a psychonaut who used the tank under the influence of different psychedelics in order to achieve greater and more profound understanding.

Thanks for reading, and if you want to know more about the topic, you can shoot me a message or take a look at this documentary:

What is the role of science, how is it designing our life?

What is the role of science, how is it designing our life?

Science is for those who seek more. It is all around us. We can learn more about our reality thanks to new emerging technologies, crafted with the power of science.

Do we need an artificial substances to feel complete? Of course no.

What this centuries technology brings us is far beyond what supplements used to be. The topic of should you consume any superficial supplements is very flooded, however I believe there is a simple rule of thumb that could be helpful.

If you are taking enough nutrients – macros and micro elements, with organic food itself. That is great, however if you can not get enough of them with food alone, you might consider some supplements.

An interesting book that I read is Stealing Fire, by Steven Kotler & Jamie Wheel. They discussed an influence of science in our future health and optimization. It is profound to understand how to trigger our flow states and use them proficiently.

I talked about flow before, you can find that article here. Today’s article is going to be a little more in-depth. I would to make you familiar with science terms and researches I have read and listen to recently. It is very deep topic, however I believe it is very important for our future. In particularly for our design and well-being. By design I mean everything we build up in our lives, including business, health and relationship aspects.

We are designed to design, and design re-designs us back.

Our perception is influenced by our environment constantly. We create our values based on what we see and what we feel entitled to. All set of influences combined help us shape our own subjective reality. Which we can design. And why do not make it in a way that is going to serve us good? We have unlimited choices. Everything from home location, to job or people that we spend our time with.

More interestingly we can design our body, our system. We could upgrade make it, not only better, but even greater. Neuroscience has a wide scope of subjects interwoven between each other. Where it is main subject is the central and peripheral nervous system. Think of it like a big platform. Where all other subject as pharmacology, psychology and technology come into play. Those domains of science, when merged together are exploring new field of life design. A new form of design, not meant to be comfortable, yet leading us to new discover our full potential. They are optimizing our well-being. Let me clarify here:

Fulfilment is set of all basic human needs met – such as food, shelter, sex, etc

Well-being is the ability to sustain a stage of fulfillment.

Jordan Greenhall

Why we need to know all this?

It is vital to understand the how to connect the dots, more than creating new. Where people rarely find a purpose and a mission in their life we ought to seek without quitting. The power behind all that is living a life with the strong conviction that you matter and your cause matter, where flow comes into play.

We can can’t connect the dots looking forward, we can only see them looking back.

Steve Jobs

We can do what we haven’t even dreamed for. We can outperform our own visions.

Being willing to sacrifice your comfort and going beyond that default zone is a stretch asking our body to support the efforts we exert. And I am not talking about a single battle. It is a constant push, a small hop every day. Leading to us to make that big jump. And when enough of us do it, the whole civilization will.

Our body needs to recover to sustain that tempo and looking for food in the corner store isn’t going to solve it. But we all know that.

Perhaps something new will be the use of neuroscience, pharmacology and psychology to push ourselves to go along that road.

PS: I hope that sparked your interest about the topic. I will get more specific with the following posts.

Happiness is for free

Happiness is for free! What a simple, yet confusing phrase. Check why and how.

Do you believe me? You need to keep on reading than.

While modern society tells you to chase money, fame, career and status that is rarely the way leading to happiness. It’s superficial, meaning it covers the true and real joy of life.

Sharing is caring”you might heard before. And also by sharing what you have, you “buy” happiness. But there isn’t any transaction for that trade. You don’t get any receipt. In fact, being outcome dependent when sharing something will corrupt the appreciation from the receiving end. It is meant to be unselfishly.

Happiness multiplies when it’s shared.

When you have nothing to eat, but a snickers, are you willing to share it with a person in need? I guarantee you that by giving him half, just half of that snickers, you will get satisfaction. That joy will feed you, like you are all of it by yourself. Simple right.

But what often stands by our way is that we are in a hurry. All the time chasing some tasks, dribbling balls into our court. That add a lot of pressure and sometimes it is unnecessary. Yeah we will now that, you would say. What is the solution than. Cultivate patience, a lot of patience. It is rarely enough. Patience for ourselves and patience for others. And don’t mistake patience for procrastination. Procrastination is when you constantly slack off. It is when you try to avoid action. Where patience is when you still act, but with slower tempo. A simple question to convince yourself to slowdown is: “What would it happen if I get this thing one week later?” Mostly likely you aren’t going to lose that much as you first thought, if anything.

Those are just a few thoughts on the subject. I will surly delve in deep in this topic later.

Enter the dream

Enter the dream is getting into more details how to sleep well

You are falling down a building and slowly realize that you are getting down with top speed. Accelerating high makes you shake in bed .. And you woke up again.

Dreams are our getaway from reality, and they give us a great experience. Which in some cases can be controlled. Those are lucid dreams. In which you realize you are dreaming, but rather waking up, you continue dreaming while this time having control over it. The possibilities are within your imagination. But this takes some practice and proper knowledge to trigger lucidity.

An interesting fact is that we all have dreams every night, but we forget some of them before we wake up.

After a hard day working or training, perhaps going for both. When you are having those high performance days, you get into the bed easily and dreams occur more often. At least that is what I have been noticed for myself. It is also useful to think about an issue/puzzle you want to solve before going to bed. And they say, that it is possible to dream about the answer. Every single sleep has different conditions, which all reflect on your dream and the overall quality of it.

To get the maximum out of your bed time you might consider those tips useful.

  • Get a pitch black room, ultimately.
  • Quiet as possible
  • not too warm and not too cold / 22 around  º C
  • comfortable mattress
  • airy room

Those are what I consider the basics. And we all need standard 8 hours of sleep in those conditions. If anything else we can go for a nap in the afternoon. However, a nap is super good and pleasant. We might consider getting a short nap for 40 min or a longer one for 1,5 hours. In that way you won’t break your sleep cycles, gaining more energy for you. It is different for every person though. I experiment with my own amount of sleep. It also depends how old you are. That plays huge role.

Sleep is the time when our muscles grow and when our mind shuts down for a moment. It is recovery for the body and mind. There is a progression during our sleep in getting into deeper and enriching sleep. Getting into different phases is in the following order: 1 & 2 phase, 3 & 4 phase, 5 phase. The first two are putting you to fall asleep, but not into deep sleep. It is a state where your body is getting relaxed. Next is 3rd & 4th phase in which your body gets still and your eyes start to move rapidly – REM sleep. And the 5th phase is deep sleep, where your body and your brain is recovering much more on Delta waves. They are restarting your capacities for being active again the next day. Of curse, if you are not hung over. Alcohol tends to disturb sleep as we well know.

Sleeping is also restarting our short-term memory. If we want to go take an exam the next day, and we didn’t prepare that much studying all night is an effective method. Not so good for missing your night sleep, but helping you remember the things you have just read.

With all new technologies that are being created nowadays, especially digital watches and phone apps. We can measure our sleep data from them, precisely enough to see how much time of which phase we got. This is profound for being at your best and performing your best. There are a lot of things to experiment with. I might delve in more in the near future. For example smells, time, positions, etc.

PS: Sweet dreams and write it down! 🙂
