Travelling Rant

Do you like to travel? Yes, you probably do. Although some of us are not daring to do it that is becoming more and more of a rhetorical question.

Traveling is supported by mainstream media, social media, airlines, tour agencies, friends and so on. They are all creating that imaginary lifestyle that we tend to read in the magazines. A mainstream message for a mainstream crowd.

But it wasn’t always like that. Years before the invention of the airplane in 1903 by the Wright Brothers, things were different. And even then they were no commercial flights for the masses. So what did the people do? Didn’t they wanted to travel for the weekend far away. Why shouldn’t they?

Perhaps that was the real game changer shifting from travel “to give” to “travel to get”.

None of us have lived in both those realms. Yet, we can imagine how the history shaped migration through the years. And that was far more interesting than a weekends escape from reality. Moreover from obligations and frames set by somebody else. Where in the times without media and lifestyle were obscure, people did traveled for other reasons.

It was dangerous, you could be killed and you may never see your family again. Imagine the quests of Marco Polo to find the Silk Road.  This courageous attempt led to more and more discovery and exploration. And we can see that he wanted something, but he gave along the way too. He didn’t purchase a safe economic flight to China, he instead sacrificed his life and went for an adventure. Then creating a mutual bond between the west and the east for the first time of history.

You probably have heard that story before. Well how that help me you might ask? It is very simple. Inspire to travel and learn, give and explore. Rather than just going out for the weekend. That is called sightseeing, it is almost like traveling, but in a commoditized form. It is shallow and purposeless leading to more consumerism and hedonism.

And I know you can argue that we don’t have time to travel or money or whatever is there stopping you. But we have choice, to go seek pleasure or explore other culture. There are infinite moves and documentaries nowadays that can show us what is it like there, where we want to go. This is hacking geography and rules that have framed people for centuries. We don’t have those boarders now, yet we waste them for egoistic goals instead.

They are all sorts of travel nowadays, the facts are that with every year the world is becoming more of a safer place.

We can choose our destination, our companions, the vehicle, the time and the activities. We have that freedom that most of us waste. We let some tour agencies decide what we would like, because we were generalized like the group before us. They offer us that what sells. It is a business, a very profitable one indeed.

So what are we left with? The reason I write this post is to bring awareness to a problem I see. It is the simple fact we have that much choices, but the stupidity of neglecting them.  I have recently read this book called Vagabonding, by Rolf Potts and I would recommend it to anyone willing to switch gears and embrace the true uncertainty of travelling.

I do have a lot of personal stories and experience in different countries, which I would like to share too. My preferences are for a meaningful mid-term travelling, speaking about a single place. The way I view it, I need at least 4 months to get to know a single place, perhaps even more. But that is the bare minimum to connect with the culture by talking with locals and doing your desirable activities.

PS: Customize your travel.

What is the role of science, how is it designing our life?

What is the role of science, how is it designing our life?

Science is for those who seek more. It is all around us. We can learn more about our reality thanks to new emerging technologies, crafted with the power of science.

Do we need an artificial substances to feel complete? Of course no.

What this centuries technology brings us is far beyond what supplements used to be. The topic of should you consume any superficial supplements is very flooded, however I believe there is a simple rule of thumb that could be helpful.

If you are taking enough nutrients – macros and micro elements, with organic food itself. That is great, however if you can not get enough of them with food alone, you might consider some supplements.

An interesting book that I read is Stealing Fire, by Steven Kotler & Jamie Wheel. They discussed an influence of science in our future health and optimization. It is profound to understand how to trigger our flow states and use them proficiently.

I talked about flow before, you can find that article here. Today’s article is going to be a little more in-depth. I would to make you familiar with science terms and researches I have read and listen to recently. It is very deep topic, however I believe it is very important for our future. In particularly for our design and well-being. By design I mean everything we build up in our lives, including business, health and relationship aspects.

We are designed to design, and design re-designs us back.

Our perception is influenced by our environment constantly. We create our values based on what we see and what we feel entitled to. All set of influences combined help us shape our own subjective reality. Which we can design. And why do not make it in a way that is going to serve us good? We have unlimited choices. Everything from home location, to job or people that we spend our time with.

More interestingly we can design our body, our system. We could upgrade make it, not only better, but even greater. Neuroscience has a wide scope of subjects interwoven between each other. Where it is main subject is the central and peripheral nervous system. Think of it like a big platform. Where all other subject as pharmacology, psychology and technology come into play. Those domains of science, when merged together are exploring new field of life design. A new form of design, not meant to be comfortable, yet leading us to new discover our full potential. They are optimizing our well-being. Let me clarify here:

Fulfilment is set of all basic human needs met – such as food, shelter, sex, etc

Well-being is the ability to sustain a stage of fulfillment.

Jordan Greenhall

Why we need to know all this?

It is vital to understand the how to connect the dots, more than creating new. Where people rarely find a purpose and a mission in their life we ought to seek without quitting. The power behind all that is living a life with the strong conviction that you matter and your cause matter, where flow comes into play.

We can can’t connect the dots looking forward, we can only see them looking back.

Steve Jobs

We can do what we haven’t even dreamed for. We can outperform our own visions.

Being willing to sacrifice your comfort and going beyond that default zone is a stretch asking our body to support the efforts we exert. And I am not talking about a single battle. It is a constant push, a small hop every day. Leading to us to make that big jump. And when enough of us do it, the whole civilization will.

Our body needs to recover to sustain that tempo and looking for food in the corner store isn’t going to solve it. But we all know that.

Perhaps something new will be the use of neuroscience, pharmacology and psychology to push ourselves to go along that road.

PS: I hope that sparked your interest about the topic. I will get more specific with the following posts.

Where does competition leave us?

Competition is one side of the spectrum. Dive in to see the other.

Have you ever chase something just to be better than somebody else? Just making that much effort to step above the other and boost your ego?

Yesterday I was competing, and I lost the first match. Meaning you are out, direct eliminations. However, Jiu Jitsu is a wonderful sport and I believe that I meant to learn something from that experience. And I did.

Being calm and in the right mindset is essential for those moments. Also physical and skill preparation. But something was missing.

I had those moments of glory so to speak when I have won. I had times when I was down too. Being a winner is a personal trait, that could be cultivated. With a deliberate action and discipline towards a goal. It is programmed in our system, in our human brain that we need to win. Back in time that was on a life or death matter. A victory may be to kill a predator trying to eat you alive or to survive a hard weather conditions. Now we are barely left with a boost of ego from that. We seek victory to put ourselves in a better social position. With that there are more than some material benefits, but more of them aren’t. It is a vital feeling for a person to feel needed and helpful. However, victory is a level above that default level. It amplifies your sense of self, you get pretty proud and sufficient. And that can come from a lot of ways, not only from sports. Winning means progress, while it isn’t the only way.

Winners draw attention to themselves and we adore them. It is absolutely natural. But here is something we rarely consider. We no longer rely on “win” or “die” mentality to survive and live. Life is easy and we are getting more comfortable than ever. While there is no wonder why some of the best world-class athletes are coming from a background of low status family. Nearly surviving around the poverty line. Because they are already living in those harsh conditions and getting out is the only way.

It is vital for us to keep the cooperative part within us as well.

Imagine competition is the far left side of the spectrum and cooperation is the far right side. When we are not cooperating we are competing and the vice versa. Why is that? Simply because when you pursue your desire to win you are being driven by a pushing force within you. With other words you are intrinsically motivated to win, you push yourself. While cooperation is the opposite, you are being pulled to contribute to the whole team, you are being pulled to act for the common good. Where, there is no good or bad between those two. But you are either on one side of the spectrum or the other. So what is in the middle than? An indecisive person trying to do both in the mean time. I felt that was what I experienced on my last competition. And cooperation is thus far more important for me. I have always been more cooperative than competitive. There was this moment, when I was still going to taekwondo competitions. In fact I was like twelve years old or close. I vividly remember that series of competitions where me and another kid from the club were fighting versus each other. That was so stupid for me, I couldn’t play my best. Where those fights were the finals. It was beautiful how we climbed after each fight to finally meat at the top, but being there was awkward.

A prediction on a global scale is that we are going to dispensary as a civilization, if we don’t change the rules of the game. We are not allowed to win that with anger and fist fight, but with a much more intelligent way. Helping everybody to start even and finish where they want. But living in cooperation is hard. We all seek that next benefit for ourselves and we ain’t willing to share it. It is hard to build a foundation where everybody is going to be socially responsible for his own acts. However, there are much more entrepreneurs and businesses who start making those decisions to strive for mutual good. For increasing life standard ubiquitously.

Routines. What are they and why we need them?

Routines. What are they and why we need them?

Honestly, I need to say I hated routines. I just didn’t want to do the same thing over and over again. Like a rat running in a hamster wheel. Where was that going to lead me? What for?

But hear me out here, please. Routines are that much important then doing something new. The key point is that without a routine you can’t go anywhere deep enough to produce meaningful results. I am talking about work and self-build habits here, where those can be implemented anywhere anytime. And the most shocking truth is that we have routines doesn’t matter, if we like them or not. We are just blind for those we do already.  Hating  routines is unproductive. It’s like an action paralysis.

I will explain. I know it is absolutely boring to do some routines and I am not advocating to stop being creative. But rather being all over the place, making a set of routines is essential to results. It is slow repetitive action, grind. And, if you are having a though time getting on board with loving your routines are creating new. Well that is easy to overcome. It is a matter of grit. You may think that you don’t have energy or it will be boring, you don’t have motivation yada, yada. In other words just simple mental blocks. We aint been born like a robot all programmed to be excellent, So we need to learn from the best practices. And first step to optimize your life is by setting routines. That will make you much more productive, organized and it will actually save you nerves and time.

Why do we make routines?

Most of the time we do so even unconsciously. It is our human nature. It is drilled in a our nervous system and muscles. Lets take a look at what snowboarders and elite athletes are doing. They train day and night, for days. Doing that specific movement over and over again. Perhaps looking like idiots while training doing the same thing. However, it is a much deeper process and they know it. It is going to affect your performance later on. It will save you time. It will be smother. It will turn off your judgmental mind. It will become unconscious. This is huge.

Where athletes don’t call them “routines”, the word itself it is actually affected with bad reputation already. Simply “drills”. Drilling is rapid and effective. Doing them over and over make you reduce the unpredictable factors outside of your control. It is a focused process of action that allows you to stay confident. That happens when you have built those neural pathways and the movement is drilled down in your muscle memory.

When I was training Taekwon-do I have done tons of drills. Every training session is entails them. The same is now, practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and snowboarding. It is inevitable to gain that calm state of confidence. Based on past experience. That’s how you gain expertise.

From where to start?

There are a lot of business books on how habits and routines work. And which are  “the best” practices. A few recommendations are “5 sec rule” Mel Robbins, “The power of habit” Charles Duhigg, the classic “7 Habits of highly effective people” Steven Covey.  And much more. I might share my book list in the near future. Goodreads is a wonderful platform. I try to systemized them there.

However, just reading those books won’t be a change itself. If you read many books, the only thing you will improve is your reading skill. And that is fine, unless you want something deeper than that. We speak here about behavior change, most likely entailing identity change. That is just a word, but I will discuss it in other post. Shortly it is sometimes the case to drop an old habit to replace it with a new one.

And to sum up, I would like to leave you with a simple practice exercise. Try to write your routines at home. Just those when you spend your time there. Make a long list of those things you spend time doing the most. And see what is your browsing routine. This one is huge. Block the websites you are wasting much time in.

By making this simple analysis you will be able to see that you actually have routines, everybody does. So why not upgrade those which doen’t excell you?

Being effective

What is being effective and how to get better.

What is the single, most important, goal for me?

That is the question we all know we need to ask ourselves to get our priority straight. It is only one thing. Not number one, number two, etc. …  But here it gets a little complicated.

Being effective is not what we are in everything, that is called perfection. And I am sorry, but perfection isn’t the goal. It is a vague dream.

“Strife for perfection to achieve excellence”

                                                                                     Vince Lombardi

I like this quote, because it give us the reason to take massive action. But why we need to do more where we want to get more for less time? Isn’t that what is being effective? It is simple, we all want to be there, but it takes time. It takes practice. We haven’t been created with any knowledge or wisdom. We need to put time and try different things until we find something that clicks. Effectiveness is the goal of every modern business, trying to get more for those fixed cost that it is already paying. And it is funny how that transfers to our personal life. Well at least for some of us, who want more of it. We try to do more before going to work. Otherwise we are just chasing other people’s agenda. Sleep, eat, work, repeat. When that might be the case for some entrepreneurs, it is rarely a long-term goal.

How do we measure effectiveness? With time. A simple example. If you produce more units than Tony, for the same time, you are being more effective. Then the boss is likely to keep you longer on work and give you more props. Were that doesn’t mean that Tony isn’t efficient per se. Perhaps he haven’t right, or have been distracted, or he haven’t used the best method. Multiples criteria overlaps here and that’s why the isn’t one solution. Moreover there are many for different situations.

“If you do the right thing at the wrong time you get pain”

Tony Robbins

Wise words from a wise man. But what does that tell us? Do more things, to find those that fit in your capabilities. And eventually it will get smoother. But that require patience. Patience to improve your skills by practice and reading. Where that is only the entry-level. Knowledge isn’t effective, wisdom is. Knowledge is simply potential power that will help you resolve an issue/problem for “x” amount of time. Wisdom, on the other hand is that what is saving your time. And perhaps you need to pay for it sometimes to save yours. Because by definition wisdom is extracted from long hours of expertise. Where that gives you the ability to see what actually brings awesome results, not only works.  It is awesome to be in that level, but in these ages of mediocrity it is hard to find your way to mastery.

That’s why average methods and solutions aren’t much demanded. They are everywhere. Where creative new traits are prone to be effective. For every thing there are some secret moves that save time. If you don’t know how to grill a burger patty you won’t do it faster than a cook will. And it is like that for everything. Specialization is effective. There are being more tech job created after every new emerging technology. They tend to be very narrow and deep in their subject matter. That’s why I can’t describe what my friends are working to my grandmother.

Lastly, with all that being said about excelling and chasing results and goals, there are a few more things to keep in mind. Sometimes it happens that we have the resources to do certain thins the best way possible, aka being effective and creative. But other times it isn’t the case. I am still getting myself to do those things. It is also a reminder for myself and I hope you find that post helpful too. Upgrade with patience. Enjoy the process.

PS: If you lost your key in the hash. Don’t dig for it, ask your roommate to make a duplicate for you. 🙂

Who are you gonna be, if you could become whatever you want?

It sounds like you need some extraterrestrial power here to help you change. But seriously think about the following questions.

Can we really change our current situation?

What, if we see no limits for our greatness?

What will happen, if you could become anything? Is your choice going to be easier or harder?

Which superhero are you going to pick, or you are going to create your own?

Yes it might sound like some philosophy far from reality, but lets take a look from what is really stopping us. As a simple imagination exercise try to answer the previous questions. And perhaps when you try, you will see it isn’t that easy, although it is just a thought experiment. Our mind is creating this million other possibilities to pick from when there are no boundaries. They expand our imagination and our choice gets more difficult. Or maybe it’s just me.

Here is what we could do. accepting external rules and dogmas are somewhat necessary, if we want to fit in the system. While some of them we could replace with our own. What I mean by that? Well the questions actually aren’t that much far from the future to become reality. That isn’t some magical show and I am not talking about the circus. In fact, take a look what Space X have done in the last years. It takes a lot to launch a rocket into space. And not even that, but to make more progress than NASA or Russian’s Roscosmos. That was building the first reusable rocket. Also Moon Express is aiming extremely high. Naveen Jain is an astonishing man, with goals so big that he literally knows no boundaries. At least for us it looks like that. Where he first knew he wants to become and set his own boundaries. His company is planning to launch a first robotic mission to go to the Moon and start exploring its natural resources. Where he initially intends to extract and collect Helium 3 to bring it back to Earth, that is only the beginning. Helium 3 has the potential power to fire fusion nuclear reactors and create energy. Where this is a big enough change by itself, he aims far beyond it. Landing on the moon is only going to be the first milestone to a multiplanetary life, is what he says.  And there are other people like Jeff Bezos and sir Richard Branson, who as well are aiming for the space.

This example is just a preview of what is possible. And new opportunities arise with each technical solution brought to the market. Where technology is often understood as machines and electronics it can be much more. It is also well implemented in medicine and neuroscience, pharmacology and education. Those domains are growing with huge exponential trends and it seems they are not stopping. And everything that is being created is getting tempting to buy. We seek the different we seek the new crazy stuff, that’s how we are wired. That is how Internet of Things is boosting data science, when we buy those new technologies. We are measuring our activity in multiple ways and everything in return gets back into analysis and modification.

Is now answering those initial questions now more compelling? I hope so. Where we constantly move from seeking pleasure and avoiding pain we restrict growth. But some of us overcome those blocks. And truly it is hard, but seeking for something more is the key. Being comfortable is temporary, because there is always some of us trying to get our spot. It is a battle. Funny enough, I don’t believe that one’s success determines other person’s failure. But comfort and procrastination does.

The path of least resistance

Most people walk in a haze through life. It is literally everyday it’s just another day to push. Why is that.

It is easier to keep your senses close. It is easier to let marketing and advertising to dictate your values. It is easier to let external sources feed you and make your day. But what happens when you skip a dose? Something is missing, we have felt that feeling. I used to buy a bunch of things that I don’t need. And that is part of what Edward Norton discussed in Fight Club. We indulge in consumerism. And I still fall in that trap today, however my awareness cuts most of the useless commodities. Does not matter, if it is IKEA items, as mentioned in the movie or some other stuff that come across your way.

Are you using your brain, or it is using you?

Take a moment next time before purchasing the next thing and, simply give it more awareness and perhaps delay, if it isn’t anything of vital need.

We are constantly being bombarded with stimulation and most of it is cheap. In fact, organizations strive to make their products/services more accessible to the vast majority of population, to profit more. Mediocre things for the middle class. Simple right?

If you want more, do more!

Standing on a crossroad with a multiple signs pointing in everybody elses clear directions is confusing. Confusing  by the fact of existing that many possibilities. It’s overwhelming And we do have much of those options, paths. Representing other people’s agendas, which of course want to make it simple for us to be easier to follow. While there isn’t anything bad in that route of choice, there is another entire highway to pick. Where you make your crossroads that eventually will join people. It is about creating your own way. How to do it? Take massive action. The path of least resistance is there for a reason, many of us tried to battle it. But most of us didn’t persist enough. That resistance is making it hard to breakthrough and express your own ideas to the world. Your personality, your character. And there is a beauty in that.

With that much conditioning from advertisers and marketing we end up getting the wrong message. Building awareness is one of the solutions to unwire ourselves and find the our true set of values. Those that drive our actions and commitments. It is literally our direction in life.

Dare to be different

Being different is in my opinion misunderstood. It can be surely weird sometimes, but that’s how we all begin. Speaking about, on the same matter, about finding your own way. Creatives are kings of expression. Doesn’t matter the form, nor the art. It is a way to find peace in our own mind by putting your ideas on the table. Just any kind of domain, platform or anything nowadays can show your work. Your creation to others. And that is what is great about the WWW, it connects random people with similar ideals.  And why not being different in that fashion? Isn’t Iphone different? It very much own its success, because of that unique feature.

Design your own way that you want to live. And cut down the things that are conditioning you. Expel the exempt. Time is here for us to now. And it will never be a better moment. That is what is hidden after you get up above the water. Limitless ideas to become alive are waiting for. What are you waiting for?

Ps: It may sound philosophical for you, but that is why you need to read this post again. I hope it helps a little glimpse of light to shine through your window. Because you can’t read the right newspaper otherwise.
